Get dipping!

We are very proud of our new pond at Michael Faraday! Not many schools have the wonderful opportunity to have a pond on school site, so we are very excited that we now have our own wildlife pond.

Beneath the surface of water, there is an unseen world of amazing wildlife ready to be discovered. Therefore, a pond has been created by Walworth Gardens with sleepers to provide pond edge resilience while children are dipping for wildlife. Who only knows what is lurking in the depths of the pond… Maybe a mysterious alien-like dragonfly nymph , or a great diving beetle perhaps!

Soon the children will find out because Oli, at Walworth Gardens, are training up the children and staff to do pond dipping responsibly. Their responsibility includes returning the wildlife to their habitat (alive!) once the activity is completed.

Did you know: dragonflies have been around on earth for around 300 million years and some of the early species may have been the size of seagulls!

There is a herb bed and natural fence on the side of the pond. At the back of the pond, Walworth Gardens planted a host of other planting, in our effort to increase the planting on our school site, which we know help to sequester carbon emissions.

At the entrance of the pond there is a picket fence, to ensure that access to the pond is only for accompanied children
