In our recent computing lesson, Y4 have been exploring the topic of “searching for information online” and had an important discussion about whether people are always who they claim to be online. To help illustrate this, we used a fun and eye-opening activity.
Two children were given images of other children and were asked to pretend to be those individuals online, having a conversation with each other. During this conversation, they asked for and shared personal information, unaware of the true identity of the person they were talking to.
At the end of the exercise, the children revealed their true identities by turning the images around – they were not who they had been pretending to be. This simple but powerful role-play activity really helped our pupils grasp the importance of online safety, reinforcing our discussion in a memorable and engaging way.
By using visuals and roleplay, we’ve ensured that our pupils have a clearer understanding of how to stay safe online and be mindful about the information they share.
