This week in Nursery, we’ve been diving into the wonderful story of Owl Babies by Martin Waddell—a beautiful tale about three little owls who wait anxiously for their mummy to come back. The children have really connected with the story, sharing their thoughts and ideas in such imaginative ways. It’s been amazing to see how they’ve understood the emotions of the baby owls and related it to their own experiences with their families.
Here’s what some of the children had to say:
“The Mum came back. ‘I’m here!’ and Baby Owl said, ‘I love my Mummy.’ (Kobe)
“Three Owls! The owl babies were saying their mama was gone. They sat altogether, and closed their eyes. And Mum flooshed her wings and came back. They flapped their wings ‘cos their Mum came back.” (Lawrence)
“The Mamma is gone, she’s gone hunting.” (Rex)
“The Owl Babies had to be brave because there was things moving in the woods. They had some thinking. They had a quick look—for Mummy. They had a big branch for Sarah, a small one for Percy and a little branch for Bill. Sarah said come on our branch and they did. They closed their eyes and wished their mummy could come and she did. ‘Mummy’, they cried.” (Marjie)
“Mummy Owl! She’s taking care of them. My Mummy takes care of me.” (Tabi)
As the children listened to the story, they not only learned about the owls’ feelings of worry and relief, but they also expressed their own thoughts on feeling safe and cared for.
At home, you can continue to enjoy Owl Babies together by asking your child to retell the story in their own words, acting out the owls’ journey or drawing their favourite part.
