This week in Year 5, we spent a creative afternoon doing observational sketches of tropical plants. Earlier this half-term, we learnt about tropical climbing plants like monsteras and pothos, which grow in rainforests such as the Amazon, during our Geography lessons. Sketching these plants gave us a wonderful opportunity to observe them closely and bring our studies to life! We even had the chance to sketch an avocado plant, native to the Amazon basin, although it was still too young to bear any fruit!
Using 4B sketching pencils, we explored how to create gradients and varied tones in our drawings. We began by outlining the basic shapes of the plants—circles and lines to map out the foundation—and then gradually added finer details. We practised different shading techniques like cross-hatching, scumbling, and blurring to create depth by highlighting shadows and light areas.
To finish the session, we enjoyed a gallery walk where we admired each other’s sketches. The level of talent in Year 5 is truly impressive, and we’re excited to showcase more of our fantastic artwork soon – so watch this space!
