We’re thrilled to be using Zones of Regulation, a child-friendly way to help children identify and manage their emotions.
The children recognise their feelings and organise them into four colour-coded “zones”:
Blue Zone: for when they’re feeling low, tired, sad, or sick
Green Zone: for feeling happy, calm, and ready to learn
Yellow Zone: for feelings of anxiety, excitement, or frustration
Red Zone: for strong emotions like anger or extreme excitement
Every morning, as your child enters their classroom, they have the opportunity to self-register. This is more than just a quick check-in; it’s an moment where children assess their mood and energy levels, deciding which zone they’re currently in. This practice has a ripple effect throughout the day, as it allows teachers to gauge the class’s overall emotional landscape and make adjustments in teaching style or activities to suit the group’s needs. If your child feels they are in the Blue, Yellow or Red Zones they will use the techniques they have been taught to move themselves into the Green Zone.
While each class in KS1 and 2 has a Zones of Regulation Self-Registration display we know self-regulation and emotional literacy are lifelong skills and start to empower our children from within the Early Years with the Colour Monster story.
Don’t forget to ask your child which zone or zones they experienced today!
