This week, Year 3 have risen to the challenge of an exciting art and design project that tested both their creativity and practical skills. Combining their art and DT knowledge, the children were tasked with creating freestanding 3D sculptures inspired by the renowned artists Anthony Caro and Robert Morris.
The project began with hands-on experimentation as the children explored different methods of joining materials—with and without glue. They mastered techniques like folding, concertinaing, using tabs and slots, as well as tying with string and carefully applying PVA glue.
Next, they turned their attention to the concept of positive and negative space. The children practised observing shapes in their surroundings and used these insights to produce striking abstract drawings.
Finally, they put all their learning together, collaborating with a partner to bring their sculptures to life. Some groups are still putting the finishing touches on their masterpieces, so stay tuned for updates and photos of their fantastic creations!
We’re so proud of their determination, teamwork, and creativity!
