celebrating lunar new year (Reception)

This week in Reception, we have been learning about the Lunar New Year. We have discovered the traditional ways to celebrate the new year by watching videos and exploring a variety of books. We read the Great Race story and enjoyed looking at the illustrations. The story taught us how the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac were chosen.

We created pictures of dragons using the technique of finger painting and learnt why colours such as red, gold and yellow are significant during this occasion. It was interesting to learn social phrases such as ‘happy new year’ in both Mandarin and Cantonese.

During the day of our celebration, we enjoyed a Chinese banquet which consisted of yummy noodles and prawn crackers with a dip of sweet chilli sauce. We ended the lovely celebration with a dragon dance around the school!
