reception – a busy space!

This half term, the topic in Reception was ‘Earth and Space’. We explored light and dark and discovered facts about space and the planets through non-fiction books and the internet. It was super fun exploring the space station role play areas and boarding our rocket ships!

We have been busy with lots of arts and crafts – creating galaxy pictures with chalk pastels, planet collages and space helmets. As part of our DT: Textiles project, we also made alien puppets. The children were inspired by the character of ‘Beegu’ and based their ideas and designs from this. During this project, the children designed their puppets using templates, learnt how to join fabrics together through sewing and then decorated their puppets to match their designs.

In Phonics, we have focused on digraphs and how to blend them together to read words. We have used our sounds to write simple sentences about space and introduced finger spaces between words. In Maths, the children compared and measured height and length using non-standard measures e.g. string, cubes, construction, pencils etc. They ordered objects in height / length order and primarily focused on using key vocabulary e.g. taller, shorter, tallest, shortest etc.

One of the highlights of this half term has to be World Book Day! The children in Reception enjoyed dressing up as their favourite characters and also brought in their favourite story books!
