a Taste of sHABBAT (Y1)

This week in R.E., our children have been learning about Shabbat and why it holds such special significance in Jewish life. As part of our exploration, the class enjoyed tasting traditional Shabbat foods—challah bread and grape juice. This hands-on experience helped bring the learning to life and offered a meaningful connection to Jewish customs.

The children reflected on the importance of Shabbat as a time of rest, togetherness, and quality moments with family and friends. They embraced the spirit of the day by playing cooperatively and enjoying each other’s company, reinforcing the values of friendship and community.

A highlight of the afternoon was a visit from a Year 3 pupil, who shared their personal experiences of celebrating Shabbat. The children were fascinated to hear about the special foods, family traditions, and games that are part of their weekly celebration. It was a wonderful opportunity to hear a real-life perspective and further deepen their understanding of this special time. It was a valuable opportunity not only to learn about another faith, but also to pause, appreciate the people around us, and think about how we can bring more calm and togetherness into our own routines.
