Ladybirds robbers & farmyard fun! (Rec)

In Reception we have been reading and talking about our core text What the Ladybird Heard. The children have really enjoyed retelling the story through role play using puppets and masks to bring the characters to life. One of the most exciting parts was ‘hot seating’ the robbers – Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh! The children asked brilliant questions about the characters’ background, behaviour and what made them want to steal the prize cow.

In Literacy we created our own ‘Wanted’ posters for the robbers. The children thought carefully about how to describe what the robbers look like – whether they are tall or short, what clothes they wear and what makes them look sneaky! They worked hard to use their phonics, practising writing words with digraphs and trigraphs.

We have also been enjoying a wide range of farm-based stories, poems, rhymes and non-fiction books. Through these the children have learnt lots of new facts and vocabulary. Using non-fiction books we found out about the different animals that live on farms and explored the geographical features of farm settings. Inspired by what they saw and heard the children created their own farm maps – showing barns, fields, fences, animals and more!

It’s been a busy and exciting time in Reception – full of imagination, discovery and learning.
