Science Gets Messy: Y4’s Fascinating Investigation!

Year 4 have finished off our science topic on Animals Including Humans in style… by examining pictures of poo!

Believe it or not, you can learn loads about an animal just from its faeces (that’s the scientific word for poo). We discussed how colour, shape, texture and size of the faeces can give us clues as to whether an animal is an omnivore, herbivore or carnivore; what kind of food it eats within those categories, and even in some cases how it eats (e.g. whether it chews or swallows its food whole).

The children used all their knowledge from this unit to investigate different samples (hygienically, via photographs!) and determine which animal produced which poo. Who would’ve thought we’d be such good poo detectives?!
