Year 4 Kate’s Class were really lucky to have a cooking workshop with the kitchen team today! Tracey first apologised that due to a problem with the fridges we weren’t able to make the pizzas as planned, but she thought on her feet and invented a savoury rock cake for us to make! The children were offered the option of including a variety of vegetables to make sure the pizza-cake included all of the main food groups.
Thanks to a question from the class, Tracey explained that one of the ingredients – margarine – was invented as a substitute for butter as it’s cheaper and more readily available, e.g. during war time when there was rationing.
The children first had to demonstrate their egg-cracking skills. We were 95% successful with only one egg casualty – a pretty good result! We then mixed the egg into the dry ingredients to create the dough, and then added in our choice of fruit and vegetables.
Tracey and her team baked the rock cakes ready for us to take home to share with our families. A brilliant experience with a delicious treat at the end. Thanks to the kitchen team!
(Year 4 Ibrahim’s Class will have their turn shortly after the half term holiday!)
