Maths Magic (Reception)

This half term, our maths learning has been full of hands-on exploration and joyful discovery.

Shapes – Squares and Rectangles: We investigated the properties of squares and rectangles, looking closely at their sides and corners. The children experimented with rotating the shapes, combining them to create new shapes, and building with multilink cubes and Geomagnet shapes. Tangrams was also a great resource as it helped us to experiment with arranging the pieces in new ways and showed wonderful creativity and problem-solving skills. We even drew our own shape pictures which was super fun!

Learning About Time: The children made their own clocks and watches, using them to learn what each hand shows. We explored the language of o’clock, half past, hours, and minutes. We also used The Very Hungry Caterpillar to learn the days of the week, sequencing the foods the caterpillar ate on each day.

One More and One Less: We played a fun counting game using frogs, dice, and a number line. The aim of the game was to help children quickly recognise what number is one more and one less than a given number. Rolling the dice and moving frogs along the number line made this skill active and engaging!
