At Michael Faraday, we love starting a new year with a really creative project! This term, Year 4 have been looking at tints and shades within a composition to make it look 3D.
We started the week by talking about the difference between tints and shades. Adults, do you know the difference? Ask your children…
We then explored using different painting tools to change the texture of our work: from cotton wool, to toothpicks… even fingers! We discussed how these can help us create different painting styles, such as pointillism and stippling.
From there, we learnt about still lifes and looked at the work of great artists such as Cezanne. We went for a more modern style of still life, in the style of ‘Queen’ by Audrey Flack, with a top down viewpoint. The children initially arranged random objects in an interesting way to create their composition. They then sketched it, and finally, painted it, employing all the different techniques we’d practised.
We hope you’ll agree the finished products are really quite eye-catching!
