Year 2 have been learning about the Great Fire of London, which took place in 1666 and began in a bakery on Pudding Lane. To bring their learning to life, the children worked together to build their own houses out of boxes, inspired by the wooden buildings in London at the time. We then recreated the burning of the houses in a carefully controlled activity, with strict adult supervision.
Watching how quickly the flames spread helped the children understand how rapidly the fire would have moved through the narrow, crowded streets. It was a powerful experience that highlighted the danger of fire and the destruction it can cause, making this historical event memorable for the children.
