During Science Day, Year 5 tested the VERY important question, “Which biscuit is best for dunking in tea?”
The children discussed different ways we could test this and decided that the fairest method was to dip each biscuit and count the number of dunks until the biscuit fell apart. We knew that we had to keep all other variables the same, so we did not change the mug, the amount of water, or the temperature of the water (we didn’t want to waste a lot of tea!).
Predictions varied with some children showing an excellent knowledge of the structural integrity of biscuits. Results also varied, with the most dunkable biscuits coming out as the pink wafer, the digestive and even the controversial – biscuit or cake (?) – jaffa cake.
Afterwards, the children reflected on their predictions and discussed what they could do in the future to take this learning further. Ideas included using actual tea or hot chocolate, testing different types of biscuits, and even comparing the taste of the soggy biscuits!
