eco-schools green Flag Award – with distinction!

We are very pleased to tell you that you and your Eco-Committee at Michael Faraday Primary School have been successful in meeting the requirements for the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award.
We reviewed your application and noted the following:
Our team enjoyed reading about the Eco-Committee you have put together this year, comprising both children and adult members with a shared passion for protecting our planet, and the selection process you put in place (well done to selected members on their appointment!). It’s great to read that Year 6 pupils were given responsibility for keeping meeting minutes – as you note, this allows them to take ownership of the Eco-Schools programme and develop their listening, communication and teamwork skills. It’s brilliant to read that the Environmental Review helped your pupils to appreciate and celebrate everything that your school is already doing to benefit our environment whilst also enabling them to identify areas to work on in the future. Your uploaded review is full of insightful comments and it’s clear that completing it helped develop ideas for future eco-activity. It’s also fantastic to read that carrying out the survey helped you identify areas where you could make a bigger impact more quickly. Great work, everybody! It was great to see how you carefully considered findings from your Environmental Review and factored them into the creation of your Action Plan. A great sign of critical thinking! We love that your Headteacher was involved in finalising the three projects to work on and that you factored in existing school initiatives – this is a clear sign that you have adopted a whole-school approach! Your Action Plan is really impressive. It’s detailed, substantial and full of ambition, from your many biodiversity projects and themed days to reducing waste and litter across your school site. We’re in awe of your dedication to the Eco-Schools programme and to improving your school environment! You have provided practical and fun curriculum examples, across many different areas of the curriculum, which impressively build on the projects you have worked on in your Action Plan. This is a great way to add context to your Eco-Schools work, it means young people at your school are given the opportunity to learn about important environmental issues and then the chance to work on these issues – a great dual approach. A particular highlight for our team was your Year 1-3 forest art project. Thank you for sharing lots of photos of the wonderful environmental learning which took place this year. Your Eco-Committee have used a wide variety of methods to inform their school community about their work including assemblies, newsletters and the school blog. This is great – it shows they take pride in their achievements and are working hard to involve and educate all around them. We hope all staff members involved in your Eco-Schools work take immense amounts of pride from the parental quote uploaded. Your hard work and dedication have inspired young people and empowered them with the belief that they can positively impact our planet – this is something incredibly special. Your successes this year are many. Your efforts and results in the Biodiversity topic in particular are incredibly inspiring and we hope that everybody involved is very proud of all they’ve achieved this year. Our team enormously enjoyed reading your evaluations of each topic – these, along with the figures provided and evidence you’ve shared with us throughout your application, point to a very successful year on your Eco-Schools journey, well done everyone! It’s fantastic to hear that taking part in the Eco-Schools programme has had such a positive impact on your entire school community. This is what the best forms of climate action are about – impactful but achievable things that create a positive experience and prompt more action. We love this! Your acrostic poem Eco-Code is punchy and powerful, full of direct calls to action. It’s also very eye-catching! It’s a great reflection of the ethos that your Eco-Committee has created, well done to all involved. Thank you for your question suggestions for next year’s Environmental Review, they’re interesting and intelligent ideas that we will take into consideration when compiling next year’s review. And the video uploaded in the bonus section was inspiring, you must be extremely proud to work with such passionate young people! The Eco-Schools Team have been blown away by your wonderful application. Everyone at Michael Faraday Primary School should be proud of the Green Team and the amazing and inspiring work that they’ve delivered this year.
We have no hesitation in awarding you an Eco-Schools Green flag with Distinction, well done!

Whole school projects have been carefully organized to address these environmental issues, fostering a sense of collective responsibility among children, staff, and the wider community. From waste audits and recycling initiatives to litter clean-up campaigns, the school has actively involved everyone in their efforts to create a greener and cleaner environment.

Additionally, by focusing on biodiversity conservation through the creation of wildlife habitats and engaging in collaborative projects with local organizations such as Walworth Garden, we are nurturing a love for nature and instilling a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living beings.

Our application for the Eco Schools Green Flag represents the culmination of our dedication to building a sustainable future for generations to come which is reflected in our whole school eco code.
