Children at Michael Faraday were very surprised to come back after half term to an unexpected visitor…
Dr Colorado Smith was in our hall, all the way from Egypt, with a very special mission for our school! Dr Smith is an Egyptologist and his team are busy in the Valley of the Kings trying to uncover a previously unexplored tomb! The only snag is, Ancient Egyptians loved to use puzzles and booby-traps to keep intruders out of their tombs. Each year group at Michael Faraday was tasked with helping out the explorers with a specific puzzle to help Dr Smith’s team gain access to the tomb.
The puzzles and challenges all involved maths and problem-solving, from calculating the perimeter of tunnels (paramount for avoiding snake pits!) to working out the volume and value of the caskets found inside, the children really put their maths brains to the test. Each year group also took part in a special workshop with the Dr himself, attempting to create accurate regular shapes without any measuring tools! How can we measure accurately without a ruler or measuring tape? Some children very cleverly worked out we can use items of consistent length such as our own bodies! I promise we’re not just having a lie down 😉
The children had a fantastic day and a really exciting welcome back to Summer 2. Thanks very much to our special visitor and his team!
