In Year 4 we explored the history of the electric light bulb and discussed the importance of remembering everyone involved in an invention. In this case, the inventor everyone knows is Thomas Edison, but fewer people are aware of the importance of the work of Joseph Swan and even fewer of the work of Lewis Latimer. Creating something often involves building on the ideas of others and sharing ideas, which is what we did when designing our torches.
We recapped our science unit on electricity and established that for our torch to function, it must have a complete circuit inside with a switch on the outside to turn the torch on and off.
Children built their torch casing using recyclable materials and were very resourceful with the shapes and functions of their torches, some thinking of string for head torches or handles for easy carrying. We were so impressed with the resilience of the children with this very fiddly project!
Well done Year 4!
