Reception’s Butterfly Adventure!

Reception have been learning all about life cycles through the fascinating journey of a butterfly. We were excited to care for our very own caterpillars and watched them grow bigger each day before forming their chrysalises. We waited patiently and were amazed to see beautiful butterflies emerge!

Once they were ready, we carefully released the butterflies into our school pond area, where they could begin their new adventure. It was a wonderful opportunity to see the final stage of the butterfly’s life cycle and talk about why butterflies are so important in nature.

The children also completed lots of fantastic writing linked to our learning. They drew and labelled the four stages of the butterfly life cycle and wrote simple sentences to describe each stage. We were so proud of their growing confidence and vocabulary.

As if that wasn’t exciting enough, some wild butterflies even flew into our classroom during the week! The children loved watching them flutter around before they found their way back outside.

Some of the children’s favourite moments included:

“I liked it when the butterfly came out of the chrysalis.”

“The butterflies flew away to find flowers.”

“I saw the caterpillars get bigger every day!”

“The butterfly came into our classroom to say hello!”

It has been a fantastic hands-on topic that has inspired lots of curiosity, careful observation and wonderful writing. Well done, Reception!
