Year 6 children have been learning about health and circulation in their Science lessons. The children learned about the different components of blood and their functions. In one lesson, the children created a model of blood using a range of everyday items.
We used oil to represent plasma, the liquid part of blood that transports the other components around the body; red food colouring to represent red blood cells, which carry oxygen; marshmallows to represent white blood cells, which help the body fight infection and disease; and red paper to represent platelets, which help blood to clot and form scabs when we are injured. We also added sprinkles to represent some of the substances carried in the blood, such as nutrients, antibodies and hormones.
The children enjoyed shaking the mixture at the end to see how the plasma carries all of the different components. It was a memorable and engaging lesson for everyone!
