Year 1 investigated the question, ‘Do taller trees have wider trunks?’ As part of their Science and Maths learning, the children measured tree trunks using string and compared their widths using cubes as a non-standard unit of measurement. They recorded their results in a table and looked for patterns in the data.
The children found that taller trees generally had wider trunks and concluded that taller trees are usually older, so older trees tend to have wider trunks. This investigation helped them develop their measuring, recording and scientific enquiry skills through practical outdoor learning.
