Drawing up a brilliant start (Y4)

Year 4 have made a brilliant start to the new school year! After a well-earned summer break, it has been wonderful to welcome everyone back and see the children settling so positively into their new routines. Ibrahim and Edie have already been impressed by the enthusiasm, teamwork and resilience the children are bringing to their learning.

We have started the term by getting creative in Art, taking inspiration from artists Sarah Graham and Nicola McBride. We have been developing our drawing skills by exploring cross-hatching to create shade and tone, thinking carefully about proportion, and experimenting with layering colour to build texture and depth.

The children first created collages using a mixture of materials, including colourful sweet and biscuit wrappers, coloured paper and magazines. They experimented with different colours, shapes and textures to create an interesting background before adding a clear focal point to draw the viewer’s eye.

They then carefully drew their compositions in pencil, looking closely at the shapes, proportions and placement of each element and applying their new shading techniques to layer colour effectively. It has been a fantastic, creative start to Year 4!
