Year 3 are really getting into our geography topic on South Wales. So far we have explored where Wales is within the UK, the region of South Wales and some of the key geographical features such as the Brecon Beacons and the Rhondda Valleys. We’ve also looked at how the physical geography of South Wales was so important to the industrial revolution because of the abundance of natural resources such as coal, limestone and iron ore.
In today’s lesson, we dived a bit into human geography, exploring how the population of South Wales expanded after 1750 due to the creation of mines, furnaces and factories. We learnt that some poor children had to work in the mines from as young as three! The Year 3s wrote a diary entry imagining they were a young child in a mine and explaining how long, dark and terrifying their day had been. It really puts having a little bit of homework into perspective!
