This week, Year 5 put our knowledge of Ancient Greece to the test as we ‘travelled back in time’ on Greek Day! It was amazing to see everyone’s spectacular costumes—from powerful gods to wise Athenians and fearless Spartans. We truly felt like we’d stepped into history.
We began by exploring what the Ancient Greeks valued through their love of theatre and festivals like the Olympics. It was fascinating to discover the origins of Olympic events—did you know javelin throwing came from military training and athletes once used bronze weights in the long jump?
Next, we created posters showing the lasting legacy of Ancient Greece, including the alphabet, democracy and the Hippocratic oath. We also discussed how the Romans helped bring Greek ideas to Britain.
To end the day, we played Petteia—an ancient Greek strategy game a bit like checkers. It got very competitive, with some of us using our chess skills to outsmart our opponents!
It was an exciting day full of learning, teamwork and creativity—and the costumes made it even more memorable!
