Y6 showcase their author’s flair!

Whilst SATS is done, the learning is still carrying on! Some of year 6 proved this week that even a quick warm-up activity can produce truly exceptional writing!

Before beginning an editing session, the children challenged themselves to craft ambitious sentences using a colon to introduce detailed lists, with semi-colons separating each item carefully and precisely. The aim was to reinforce the importance of vivid description and accurate punctuation in creating powerful writing.

We imagined the hustle and bustle of a busy mainline station and quickly generated ideas about the kinds of people you might see there – tourists, commuters, school trips, families and visitors. What followed were some wonderfully perceptive and atmospheric pieces of writing that captured the energy of the scene beautifully.

These examples particularly stood out:

PRINCE:
The station was full of people: joyful school parties, their faces beaming from ear to ear; curious tourists venturing off in all directions; and solemn commuters, hastily searching for coffee, while looking at the latest news on their phones.

YAQUB:
There were many people in the station: commuters with their heavy bags, trying to get to work for the 9 to 5; school parties with kids scrambling everywhere with loud voices – their teachers frantically doing headcounts; and family members just visiting for the holiday, with headphones in, just trying to get through the journey.

AMELIA:
The station was crowded with flocks of people: tourists staring in confusion at the train times; rowdy school children eyeing the Krispy Kremes stall; and excited shoppers, their noses pressed against the glass of the boutique opposite the escalators.

LEON:
At the famous Paddington Station, I saw a lot of interesting people: stressed students running for the train; tourists huddling outside giftshops, spending every penny they had on fridge magnets; and giggling school parties in their hi-vis jackets, holding hands.

So vivid! The children showed real maturity in their ability to paint scenes with words, carefully balancing detailed description with clear punctuation choices.

To bring the writing to life even further, we even asked AI to create a painting inspired by the atmosphere and narrative of the station scenes – a fantastic way to combine creativity, technology and imagination.

We hope parents enjoy reading these brilliant examples of Year 6 authorial flair as much as we did!
